Chiropractic Has Always Been Essential In Healthcare

The COVID-19 crisis has brought about many different questions, opinions, beliefs, not just about the novel virus, but also about health and healthcare. While many industries have been shut down due to being “non-essential”, Chiropractic offices around the globe have been deemed “essential” and encouraged to remain open to help during the crisis.

Let us look at these World Health Organization’s definitions:

Chiropractic: A healthcare profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation, with a particular focus on subluxations.

Health: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

What makes Chiropractic care essential in healthcare?

Chiropractors, for many, serve as primary care providers. This means many people seek advice and care from their chiropractor for all health-related questions or concerns. Well trained chiropractors are experts in differential diagnosis and refer patients to a specialist when necessary. Most chiropractors also have medical imaging, such as x-ray, in the office.

During times when hospitals are becoming overrun, chiropractors play an essential role in the healthcare system. The Washington State Chiropractic Association came out with a statement on March 18, 2020 with the following stance:

“The WSCA has already called on all Washington chiropractors to remain open and accept patients. We have done so with an eye toward maintaining patient access to chiropractic, and while that is still one of our goals, there is also a bigger picture we must consider. This is a public health emergency and we have an important role to play.

Most chiropractic patients present with musculoskeletal conditions, and many do not have primary care physicians. Without their preferred healthcare providers, those patients will either compound the burden on emergency facilities, or they will attempt to treat themselves. Self-diagnosis and treatment are dangerous even in the absence of a public health emergency, and even more so now. Chiropractors are uniquely situated to address these and other cases.”

Chiropractic’s unique approach to health

The traditional model in healthcare is to wait until you have symptoms, disability, or disease to seek care or treatment. Chiropractic takes a much more proactive approach to health. Our chiropractors have post-graduate training in pre-/post-natal and infant care, as well as all other ages. The nervous system – made up of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves – controls and regulates all systems in the body such as the musculoskeletal, digestive, immune, cardiovascular, respiratory, reproductive, urinary, etc. Chiropractors focus on ensuring your spinal cord can transmit the vital energy from your brain to all these systems with ease and without interference. Do you think it is possible for someone to appear healthy but still be prone to injury, illness or disease? Just because we feel good and look good does not mean we are in the clear. If you really want to live an optimal health lifestyle don’t you think making sure your body’s master controller (nervous system) is stress free and functioning at a high level is of the utmost importance? This is what our primary focus is and there are countless stories from patients that have gained life back in their bodies they never thought was achievable through this approach.
